How to Set Up a DayZ PvE Server in 2026
Write your PvE rules before choosing mods. Decide whether players can damage one another, vehicles or bases, and whether traders need different rules. Then install the controls for those decisions and test them with another player.
Start with a working vanilla PC server using the server setup guide. For a closed group, private DayZ hosting explains passwords and whitelists. Those controls decide who can join; you still need to configure player damage.
Build around tested rules:
- Use a mod for PvE damage controls; standard DayZ settings do not provide a complete PvE mode.
- Add the Expansion safe zones, territories, traders or AI your community needs.
- Adjust
events.xmlandtypes.xmlfor the threats and supplies you want. - Try attacks inside zones, outside them and across the boundary.
How PvE Works in DayZ
Section titled “How PvE Works in DayZ”Passwords and whitelists in the DayZ server configuration restrict admission. They leave combat rules unchanged.
DayZ Expansion adds optional traders, base building and AI. Choose a dedicated PvE mod for map-wide damage rules and check its maintained release before installing.
The older PVEZ author’s configuration notes describe PvE/PvP regions and warn that setting names and values have changed. Its Workshop description explains that it restores health after an attack, so a lethal single hit can still kill. Those older notes illustrate a limitation to check, rather than a current installation recommendation.
Use the PVEZ Reloaded zone procedure when installing that fork. It explains the changed damage hook, combat modes, circle coordinates and schedules, with public administrator writes left pending release-specific access review.
Read the gameplay settings reference before changing cfggameplay.json. Its base and container controls do not disable combat between players.
Test the damage mod with another player before adding content. Try the attacks your rules prohibit. Add traders, AI and building mods one at a time and repeat the tests after each addition, so you know where to start if a conflict appears.
Configure map-wide player protection
Section titled “Configure map-wide player protection”NoPvP — PvE Player Damage Blocker, Workshop ID 3716852438, provides a current author-documented setup to evaluate:
- Take a stopped backup and use an isolated server copy.
- Install the original package using the mod installation procedure. Copy its supplied signing key into the server’s
keysfolder and retain signature checks. - Follow the author’s launch example,
-mod=@NoPvP, using your actual folder name. Preserve other required packages and their order. - Start once, then stop normally. The author documents generated files at
$profile:NoPvP/NoPvPConfig.jsonand$profile:NoPvP/NoPvPOwnership.json;$profile:is the active server profiles folder. - Edit the generated configuration. Review
enablePvPBlock, blockIndirectPlayerDamage, persistIndirectDamageOwnership, protectCarriedExplosivesFromPvP,notifyAttackerandlogBlockedAttemptsagainst the author’s enabled settings. Keep the file’s value types and unrelated fields. Decide separately whetherprotectPlayersFromOwnExplosivesfits your self-damage rules. - Restart, check the current logs and complete the tests below. Keep the ownership data in backups.
The author’s support thread records fixes for Expansion AI detection and worn-gear damage, followed by a memory-leak fix that broke startup in version 1.0.6. The author identifies 1.0.7 as the startup repair; a user subsequently confirms booting. That report does not establish long-session memory use on your mod set. Monitor memory and ownership-file growth during representative play and across restarts.
This is a global damage-blocking example. If your rules permit PvP in selected areas or at scheduled times, choose controls that explicitly implement those exceptions and check them together. Publishing a PvP-zone rule does not change a global blocker’s behavior.
Test PvE with ordinary player accounts
Section titled “Test PvE with ordinary player accounts”Use two players without administrator god mode. Record the server build, exact mod versions, location, weapon and result for each test.
| Check | Result to verify against your rules |
|---|---|
| Player fires at or melees another player | Health, blood, shock and bleeding match the protection policy; inspect worn gear and cargo too. |
| High-damage or explosive attack | No prohibited kill occurs before protection takes effect. Check carried explosives, placed traps and attacks from both players. |
| Vehicle contact and attacks on vehicles | Test occupant damage, run-over damage, vehicle health and attachments separately. |
| Infected, wildlife or installed AI attacks | Allowed environmental combat still works in both directions. |
| Base attack or dismantling | Damage and interaction permissions follow the published raid rules. |
| Inside, outside and across any zone boundary | Test both attacker/victim directions, then repeat after leaving the zone and after any scheduled rule change. |
| Restart with a placed trap or explosive | Recheck protection and ownership after reconnecting; a pre-restart result is insufficient. |
Keep the .ADM, RPT and mod logs for unexpected results. A PvE label alone does not explain a death: in a May 2026 report, the player later identified a weekend PvP zone. Confirm the active rule and inspect the event before blaming a damage mod.
DayZ Expansion PvE Features
Section titled “DayZ Expansion PvE Features”Choose the modules you need and use each module’s configuration reference to find its settings. They can live in different folders.
Territories
Section titled “Territories”Territories let players claim land and manage membership. After setting building permissions, ask someone outside the group to try building, dismantling and raiding. Describe the protection in your rules once you have checked those actions.
Safe Zones
Section titled “Safe Zones”Use Expansion safe zones for protected areas such as traders. The SafeZoneSettings reference puts SafeZoneSettings.json under expansion/settings/ in the active mission. Enable and define the zone, review vehicle damage and cleanup options, then test with your installed mods before announcing the rules. EnableForceSZCleanup and EnableForceSZCleanupVehicles can delete dropped items and vehicles after the configured lifetimes; review those separately from protection. Preserve m_Version.
Traders
Section titled “Traders”Expansion NPC traders buy and sell gear, weapons, vehicles and building materials. Set the items, prices and stock for each location. Compare the trades with the loot players can find so you can check the economy before launch.
Follow Expansion Market trader setup for file paths, NPC placement, zone coverage and purchase tests.
AI Missions
Section titled “AI Missions”Expansion AI adds NPC bandits and patrols. Place encounters where they fit your rules, then test combat and server load. A server focused on survival, building or exploration may not need AI missions.
Server Settings for PvE
Section titled “Server Settings for PvE”Locate the active mission and profile directory before editing a mod’s settings. Compare generated files with the module documentation to avoid changing an unused copy.
Expansion Damage Settings
Section titled “Expansion Damage Settings”Expansion’s DamageSystemSettings handles explosion damage for configured items, including supported base-building objects. Set "Enabled": 1 to enable that system. Configure player damage in the PvE mod you selected for that purpose.
Zombie and Wildlife Tuning
Section titled “Zombie and Wildlife Tuning”Check the economy files together before increasing infected or wildlife:
db/events.xmlcontains events, including infected and animal entries. Read the event limits alongside the terrain’s zone or territory data.db/globals.xmlcontains theZombieMaxCountandAnimalMaxCountcaps. Corpse-cleanup timers affect a different stage of the lifecycle.- Infected zones and territory data control spawn locations and conditions. You need to check these when adding entities to a town; a higher global cap does not assign them there.
Bohemia’s Central Economy configuration reference and terrain setup guide explain how the files work together. Back up the mission and make changes on an isolated instance.
Increase counts in small steps and visit populated areas after each change. Measure the combined load from infected, wildlife, AI and your mods before choosing a multiplier for that map.
Weather and Time Settings
Section titled “Weather and Time Settings”Choose the day length and darkness your group wants. serverTimeAcceleration sets the time multiplier; serverNightTimeAcceleration multiplies it again at night. Watch a complete cycle to check the result. Use the terrain or weather mod’s settings for weather and temperature.
Loot Economy
Section titled “Loot Economy”Edit db/types.xml in the active mission or its configured overrides. nominal sets a target count and min sets a replenishment threshold. Counting flags and spawn conditions affect where items appear, so keep the original files and test a small change before increasing more values.
For bulk edits, open a mission ZIP copy in the free DayZ economy editor. Preview the loot, event and territory multipliers, then download the changed files. The sample loot walkthrough demonstrates a 2× XML change without touching the live server.
Best DayZ PvE Mods for 2026
Section titled “Best DayZ PvE Mods for 2026”Install mods for specific features and read their current requirements. Expansion’s installation guide lists CF and Dabs Framework alongside module or bundle choices. Core alone does not include every Expansion feature.
DayZ Expansion hosting covers the file access and configuration involved in running these modules.
| Mod | What It Does | Requires |
|---|---|---|
| Community Framework (CF) | Provides a shared framework for supported mods, including Expansion. | Use the mod’s required-item list |
| DayZ Expansion modules | Adds selected features such as market trading or base building. | CF, Dabs Framework and the requirements of the selected modules |
| DayZ Expansion AI | Adds NPC patrols and AI encounters. | Use the current Expansion installation guide |
| Trader | Provides NPC merchants with a buy/sell economy. | Read the current Workshop required items |
| TraderPlus | Adds economy functions such as banking and vehicle trading. | CF; review the author’s first-launch CarLock precautions before using existing vehicle data |
| Code Lock | Adds digital keypad locks for supported doors and gates. | Read the current Workshop required items |
| BuilderItems | Adds building and decoration assets. | Client and server package; avoid duplicating assets already included in Expansion |
| VPPAdminTools | Provides player management, teleport, weather control and logging. | CF |
| Base Building Plus | Expands construction options. | CF and the author’s economy definitions; verify support for your build |
MuchStuffPack’s author ended support at DayZ 1.26. Keep that limitation in mind when evaluating an existing server that uses it; it is not part of this new setup. Check the damage-control package first, then add only the content your rules need.
Load each dependency before the package that needs it. Follow the author’s order rather than putting all unrelated mods after Expansion. Keep the .RPT logs if a change fails and reproduce it on a copy. Check versions and signing files as well as load order when investigating crashes or signature errors.
For installation, files and keys, follow the DayZ mod setup guide.
Finding DayZ PvE Servers to Join
Section titled “Finding DayZ PvE Servers to Join”Find a community through a listing, then check whether its rules fit the way you want to play.
DayZ server browser. Enter “PvE” in the name filter and review the population and required mods. Open the community rules before joining.
DZSA Launcher. Search its server-name filter for “PvE”, then follow the launcher’s setup instructions for the required client content.
BattleMetrics. Browse the DayZ directory for servers and reported activity. Ask the community about damage enforcement; browser query results do not measure it or playable uptime.
Discord communities. Read published rules and recent announcements, and find the staff contacts. Ask about protection and moderation before investing time in a character. Check in-game activity as well as the chat.
Find out whether staff enforce PvE through blocked damage, moderation or both. Ask how safe-zone boundaries and raids work.
Hosting a DayZ PvE Server on VYKIX
Section titled “Hosting a DayZ PvE Server on VYKIX”Test your busiest trader locations, AI encounters and scheduled events with the mod set you plan to run. Include persistent bases and representative player activity. The DayZ requirements guide explains which readings to collect during those tests.
Check DayZ PvE hosting for the files and controls your rules need. Roleplay hosting covers admission and staff access for character-based communities, while private hosting covers passwords and whitelists for closed groups.
Run your PvE setup in VXPanel:
- Workshop installs. Track the install, review dependencies, set scope and order, then restart. Checking for updates leaves the files unchanged; follow the panel mod workflow to install them.
- No per-slot fee. Set your player cap without an added slot charge. Slots, RAM and storage remain subject to the plan’s fair-use limits. See DayZ plans.
- Plan hardware. Check the CPU and region shown for the configuration you order. Trial hardware can differ, so test your mods and busiest areas on the configuration you intend to use.
- VxShield included. DayZ-aware filters check supported game traffic before it reaches the server.
Read the Rearmed deployment write-up for that build and the StalkerZ case study for its attack rounds and filtering work. Use your own workload test to size your PvE server.
The DayZ DDoS documentation explains the protocol-specific controls.
Choose DayZ PvE hosting. To plan a move from another host, send us your map, mods and files.
