DayZ Server Tools: The Owner's Toolkit Explained
A DayZ admin needs to change settings, recover files and find the cause of failures. Add package and key management if you run mods. Use scheduling for repeat jobs where it helps; a vanilla server can run without a mod installer or a fixed restart timetable.
This reference covers Steam PC hosting. Match self-managed tools to your host operating system, and use the controls assigned to your managed service. A Windows file path, Linux shell command and provider-panel field are different ways to perform a task; do not mix them into one installation procedure.

Config Editor: serverDZ.cfg Is the Server
Section titled “Config Editor: serverDZ.cfg Is the Server”Confirm which file -config selects before editing serverDZ.cfg. It holds the server identity, player limit, mission and time settings. Leave verifySignatures = 2 enabled for supported mod-signature checks. Keep instanceId and storage paths unchanged on a live service unless you intend to move them; another assignment can load a different persistence folder and make the world appear empty. In VXPanel, select Refresh, wait for Synced, edit the fields and review Unsaved. Save, wait for confirmation, then restart if the change requires it and test the result. A raw-config error can prevent saving, and the service policy may make Raw config read-only. Economy Editor: types.xml Runs the Loot Table
Section titled “Economy Editor: types.xml Runs the Loot Table”The active mission’s types.xml defines item types and their economy settings. nominal sets a target count and min sets the replenishment threshold. Counting flags, eligible spawn positions and the other economy settings affect where loot appears. Follow the loot procedure for economy changes and the DayZ PvE guide for damage rules. Use VXPanel’s XML config editor for types.xml or edit a downloaded copy and transfer it back. Back up the mission, then validate the change on a test copy before putting it on the live world.
For bulk changes, open one mission ZIP in the free DayZ economy editor. It runs in your browser and can scale supported types.xml, event, infected and wildlife values. Review the edits and download the result. Your source ZIP stays in the browser; the tool does not upload it or connect to the server.
The download contains changed supported files and VYKIX-CHANGES.json, not a complete mission backup. Keep the original ZIP. Match each exported relative path to the active mission before replacing files on a stopped test server, then check logs and natural spawns.
Mod and Key Manager: Where Most Admin Time Goes
Section titled “Mod and Key Manager: Where Most Admin Time Goes”Follow the author’s instructions for package files, signing keys and loading scope. Use -serverMod= for packages that support server-only loading. The VPPAdminTools installation guide puts CF before VPPAdminTools in the normal list: "-mod=@CF;@VPPAdminTools".
VPP permissions are separate from panel access, RCON and DayZ’s built-in admin password. Use the VPP setup procedure to configure its Steam64 list, credentials and staff roles in the active profile directory. Grant each operator the permissions their job needs and test that role with a new login.
After updating, check client-required versions and keys against the publisher’s release. If joins fail, check scope as well as the files.
In VXPanel’s Workshop workflow, open the item, read its required mods and start the install. Wait for Installed mods, check scope and order, then restart during a maintenance window. Read the author’s instructions alongside the Workshop list because dependency metadata can be incomplete.
Check updates compares the installed-copy timestamp with Steam’s cached timestamp. Update catalog refreshes the catalog information. Neither installs files. Confirm Restore mods on startup under Advanced settings or ask support which update workflow your service uses. Check status again after the update and refresh. Backups: The Tool You Value One Edit Too Late
Section titled “Backups: The Tool You Value One Edit Too Late”Take a backup before changing the mission, persistence or production mods. If a change leaves the world looking empty, preserve the files and check the selected storage folder before restoring. A failed start alone cannot tell you whether data was corrupted or deleted.
The paid DayZ plan has three same-server backup slots. While the service is active, download the server data, world, configurations, databases and mods available within your assigned directory and file policy through VXPanel. Verify an independent copy of anything you cannot rebuild. Local backup slots share the risk of a server or storage failure with the live files.
Check the backup file list against the active mission, profile and storage paths. A completed job only copies its configured scope. Use the backup and restore procedure to verify a stopped recovery copy on a separate instance.
Scheduler: Restarts Without the Alarm Clock
Section titled “Scheduler: Restarts Without the Alarm Clock”Schedule restarts for the maintenance your server needs and warn players before they happen. On a self-managed server, use OS tasks and scripts. VXPanel provides scheduled tasks and restart controls. Check the time zone, read the task result and confirm that the server came back online.
Use the restart schedule guide for VXPanel’s presets and preview. Its custom restart expressions use Quartz syntax; a five-field Linux cron expression does not fit that control. Restart and wipe schedules perform different actions, so check which form you opened before saving.
Monitoring: Knowing Why It Broke
Section titled “Monitoring: Knowing Why It Broke”Save RPT logs when investigating starts and crashes. The VXPanel console shows live output and recent metrics. With -doLogs enabled, logAverageFps = 1 requests a server-FPS reading each second. Compare it with player activity, resource use and the FPS cap before deciding whether hardware is the cause. Use the lag diagnosis guide to record the sample interval and distinguish client frames, server simulation and connection symptoms. A saved log and the current live-console buffer can contain different portions of a run.
If you suspect DDoS, send support the endpoint, time window and what players experienced. We can compare that event with protection data; an ordinary network graph alone cannot classify the traffic as an attack.
