How to update a DayZ server and its mods
Update a DayZ server during a maintenance window: stop the game, verify a recovery copy, update the server application and required mods, review mission-file changes, then join with an updated client. Updating the executable alone does not update every mod or preserve every edited stock file.
This procedure covers DayZ PC servers. On VYKIX, use the documented VXPanel controls below. On a self-managed Windows or Linux host, use SteamCMD against the existing installation directory.
Prepare a recovery copy
Section titled “Prepare a recovery copy”Record the current server build, stable or experimental branch, active mission, launch arguments and mod load order. Read the game’s update notes and the installed mods’ migration instructions before stopping the server.
Warn players, stop DayZ through its normal administration controls, and wait for the process to exit. Prevent a restart schedule or supervisor from starting it during file replacement.
| Data to preserve | What to check |
|---|---|
| Server configuration and launch settings | The file selected by -config, active mission template, ports and instance settings. |
| Mission files | The active mpmissions directory, custom XML files and their cfgeconomycore.xml registrations. |
| World persistence | The storage location used by this instance. Check custom -storage settings as well as the mission’s storage directories. |
| Profiles and mod-owned data | The actual -profiles path, admin permissions, mod configuration and any separate databases. |
| Installed packages and signing keys | Mod folders, Workshop IDs, versions, load scope and keys needed to identify the previous configuration. |
Check the backup’s contents, date and size. Keep an external copy of irreplaceable data. VXPanel backups include their configured paths only; follow Backups and restores before assuming that a listed archive covers the world and every mod.
An update does not require a routine world wipe. If the game or a mod author requires a migration or reset, review that specific requirement separately.
Update through VXPanel
Section titled “Update through VXPanel”- Open Mods and use Check updates to review installed Workshop bindings.
- Check Advanced settings for the service’s update handling, including Restore mods on startup, Shutdown on game update and Shutdown on mod update. Review the notification countdown and maintenance schedule.
- Confirm the update workflow supplied for your service before restarting. An update check reports timestamps; it does not replace files. Update catalog refreshes cached Workshop metadata, not the installed packages.
- Run the configured maintenance workflow. Wait for file operations to finish before starting DayZ or submitting another update request.
- Refresh the installed-mod catalog, repeat Check updates, and inspect the current Console and Logs.
Installed unknown or Latest unknown means the panel lacks a usable timestamp. It does not establish that a package is current. Local bindings need the update method supplied by their author.
Update a self-managed server with SteamCMD
Section titled “Update a self-managed server with SteamCMD”Use the same install directory and branch as the running server. A successful download to a different directory leaves the service’s existing files unchanged. These examples update the stable DayZ Server application, 223350.
For Windows, replace the paths and Steam login name, then run in PowerShell:
& 'C:\SteamCMD\steamcmd.exe' +force_install_dir 'C:\DayZServer' +login YOUR_STEAM_LOGIN +app_update 223350 +quitFor Linux, run as the account that manages this installation, replacing both paths and the login name:
/home/dayz/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir /home/dayz/servers/dayz-server +login YOUR_STEAM_LOGIN +app_update 223350 +quitEnter any password or Steam Guard challenge when prompted. Keep credentials out of scripts, shell history and screenshots. Bohemia’s Linux server instructions document the SteamCMD installation/update method and distinguish stable application 223350 from experimental 1042420. Keep the server and clients on matching branches.
Wait for SteamCMD to report that the application update completed successfully. Save an error before retrying; disk space, account access or a download failure can leave maintenance incomplete.
The command above omits validate. Valve’s validation guidance explains that validation checks installed application files against Steam’s copies and overwrites changed stock files. Use it when repairing an installation, after backing up and planning to review those files. An ordinary update can also replace files changed by the release.
Update Workshop mods as a matching set
Section titled “Update Workshop mods as a matching set”The server application update does not refresh separately installed Workshop packages. Use your mod manager or the author’s download method to update each package and its dependencies while DayZ is stopped.
For a self-managed SteamCMD installation, this example downloads Community Framework from the DayZ Workshop application, 221100:
login YOUR_STEAM_LOGINworkshop_download_item 221100 1559212036quitRun these in an interactive SteamCMD session. Inspect its reported download location, then deploy the complete downloaded package to the mod directory used by your launch configuration. A Workshop download does not automatically replace a separately copied @CF folder.
Preserve mod configuration and persistence according to the author’s instructions. Review changed signing keys, keep dependencies before dependent mods, and retain the correct client/server loading scope. Follow the mod installation guide for package placement and keys.
Players must also have the matching client-required packages. Compare the server’s deployed version with the client’s installed version when a join reports a missing PBO, signature error or mod mismatch. A Workshop subscription on the administrator’s PC does not prove that the host’s copy was updated.
Preserve economy edits when mission files change
Section titled “Preserve economy edits when mission files change”Keep three copies for comparison: the previous stock mission, your edited mission and the new stock mission. Apply intentional local changes to the new baseline. Restoring an entire old types.xml over a new release can discard newly added items and other game changes.
For future maintenance, keep supported Central Economy changes in separate registered XML files. The loot override tutorial shows a complete example. After an update, retain those files and check that the new cfgeconomycore.xml still registers them.
Scalespeeder demonstrates this maintenance approach in a video published on 19 February 2026. Separate overrides reduce repeated editing, but still need review when classnames, merge rules or the mod’s configuration change. Bohemia’s mission-file modding reference defines the supported registration types. This mechanism does not register arbitrary JSON files.
Use the documented registration type spawnabletypes for a cfgspawnabletypes.xml override. Its attachment and cargo lists replace the original lists; they do not append missing entries from the new stock file. Message overrides append messages instead of replacing the originals. Review those merge rules before carrying an override into a new release.
Verify the update before reopening
Section titled “Verify the update before reopening”- Start the server and read the new startup logs. Confirm the build, loaded mission and required packages; resolve XML or script errors first.
- Join from an updated client using the assigned address and game port. Confirm your character and an existing persistent object where practical.
- Test the systems affected by the update: admin access, modded interactions, trader data or natural loot spawns as applicable.
- Check launcher visibility separately from a successful direct join.
- Record the installed versions and observed result, then restore the intended restart schedule and reopen admission.
For server version doesn’t match local version, check branch and game build on both sides. For a mod-specific error, check the deployed package and dependency versions before changing unrelated server settings.
Recover from a failed update
Section titled “Recover from a failed update”Keep the server stopped if it starts with unexpected world data or repeated errors. Save the failed startup logs and compare the changed files with your recovery copy.
Restore only the configuration or data needed for the diagnosed failure. A binary rollback also needs compatible game clients and mods; SteamCMD normally updates to the available branch, and a world written by a newer build may not be safe to open with an older one. Do not assume that downloading the current branch recreates a previous release.
If you need to restore the world, use a consistent recovery set and the restore procedure. Keep the failed state for diagnosis before replacing it.
Before maintenance, use the DayZ backup and restore guide to inventory persistence and mod-owned data and rehearse recovery.
