How to fix missing PBO errors on a modded DayZ PC server
A missing-PBO error means DayZ rejected content verification during a join. Capture the full message, identify the named mod or file, then compare the files the client and server load. A Workshop subscription alone does not prove that the required package is loaded or matches the server copy.
This guide is for DayZ Standalone PC. For first-time installation, use the DayZ mod setup guide. For a server you cannot reach, start with connection and visibility troubleshooting.
Record the exact rejection
Section titled “Record the exact rejection”Copy the full warning, hexadecimal code, mod names and any PBO path. Record the attempted join time so you can locate the same connection in the server’s RPT log. Ask the affected player to retain the client log from that attempt too.
If the warning lists several mods without naming a PBO, inspect the client log for that join before choosing a package to repair. Record any path it provides. A list of loaded mods does not identify which file failed.
Bohemia’s error-code reference distinguishes these checks:
| Code | Meaning | First comparison |
|---|---|---|
0x00040073 |
VE_MISSING_MOD |
Required client mod against the loaded client list. |
0x00040074 |
VE_EXTRA_MOD |
Client-loaded mods against the server’s list. |
0x0004007E |
VE_MISSING_BISIGN |
Named PBO and its supplied signature file. |
0x0004007F |
VE_MISSING_PBO |
Named package’s PBO inventory. |
0x00040090 / 0x00040091 |
PBO or PBO-version mismatch | Client and server copies of the named package. |
Related verification codes can identify a newer client, a newer server or corrupt content. Read the complete message before choosing which side to repair. A missing signature and a missing mod require different checks.
Determine who is affected
Section titled “Determine who is affected”Test a new join from a second client using the server’s required mod set. A player who remains connected from before an update does not establish that new joins work.
| Observation | Where to investigate next |
|---|---|
| One player fails; another new join succeeds | Compare that player’s loaded packages, local paths and completed downloads. |
| New joins fail after a server mod change | Inspect the changed server package, dependency list and startup paths. |
| Error names vanilla game files | Check game-file integrity and that client and server use the intended branch/build. |
| The join times out without a verification message | Investigate the connection path and logs before treating it as a missing-PBO failure. |
These observations narrow the search; they do not prove a cause. In a 21 September 2026 Reddit report, one player failed content verification while other players could join. The owner also reported that the connection appeared in the server RPT. That is a reason to compare loaded content before changing router settings.
The same report’s warning did not identify a PBO, and the available replies contain no confirmed resolution. Do not treat its suggested reinstall steps as a proven fix.
Match the client’s loaded mods
Section titled “Match the client’s loaded mods”Have the player close DayZ and use its launcher to select the server. Choose SETUP DLCs AND MODS AND JOIN when prompted, then allow Steam to finish the required downloads before launching.
Check the resulting mod list:
- Match each required item by its Workshop ID and publisher, not its display name alone.
- Include the dependencies listed by the mod author. A main package can depend on another item.
- Look for an older local release, duplicate binding or manually selected folder alongside the Workshop copy.
- Check which path the launcher loads for the package named in the error.
- Retry a new join and retain the new warning if it changes.
Use the launcher’s Open folder in Windows Explorer control to inspect the package it selected. Bohemia’s mod structure reference places PBO content in the package’s Addons folder. Compare the named file with the server package and the author’s release.
Confirm the server loads the intended package
Section titled “Confirm the server loads the intended package”On a self-managed server, read the startup arguments and resolve each mod path to its installed folder. Bohemia documents normal mod loading through -mod= and server-only loading through -serverMod= in its configuration reference.
Use server-only loading when the publisher supports it. Moving a client-required content mod into -serverMod= does not replace installing the client files.
For VYKIX hosting, inspect Installed mods, including scope, required mods and load order. A local binding selects an existing folder; creating one does not transfer or validate package files. Restart after a loading change and inspect the current startup log.
Compare the installed server folder with the downloaded package. If you copied Workshop files to a separate @ModName folder, downloading a new Workshop version leaves that copied folder unchanged until your update process replaces it. Check the path the server uses, not a spare download directory.
To compare a named PBO on Windows, run this read-only PowerShell command on the client and server. Replace the example path on each machine with the file in its active loaded package:
Get-FileHash -LiteralPath 'C:\DayZMods\@ExampleMod\Addons\example.pbo' -Algorithm SHA256 | Select-Object Algorithm, Hash, PathCompare the complete Hash values. Different values identify different file contents; matching SHA256 values provide evidence that the two copies contain the same bytes. Microsoft documents this file comparison. Compare a named .bisign file in the same way when investigating signatures. Matching hashes do not validate a signature, confirm the rest of the package or prove that either process loaded those paths.
Repair the affected package on the side that differs
Section titled “Repair the affected package on the side that differs”If the client’s package is missing or incomplete, use its launcher repair control when available, or the supported Workshop reinstall workflow for that item. Close the game first and wait for downloads to complete. The recent Reddit replies suggest restarting Steam between unsubscribing and resubscribing; treat that as a recovery step, not a confirmed diagnosis of the reported case.
For a stale server copy:
- Record its Workshop ID, active path, scope and dependencies.
- Back up the active mission, persistence and any mod-owned settings or data.
- Stop the server and use the supported installer or transfer process to place the intended release at the active path.
- Preserve custom settings outside the distributed package as the author requires.
- Check the new package inventory, start the server and test with a matching client.
Use the server and mod update procedure for the maintenance sequence. Avoid mixing PBOs from one release with signing files from another.
If the error names vanilla files or reports a corrupt game installation, follow Steam’s game-file verification instructions: Library → DayZ → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Recheck the named Workshop package after that process; a base-game verification result is insufficient evidence that a mod copy matches.
Check signing files when the error points to signatures
Section titled “Check signing files when the error points to signatures”For signed client content, compare the publisher’s supplied PBO and .bisign files with the installed copy, and check that the server accepts the required public .bikey in keys/. The mod installation guide explains their roles.
Keep verifySignatures = 2; and obtain intact matching files from the publisher. Renaming a file or disabling verification leaves the content mismatch unresolved. Before removing a key, check whether another active package uses it.
Re-test and keep the evidence
Section titled “Re-test and keep the evidence”Attempt a new join from the affected client after each targeted change. If it succeeds, repeat from the comparison client and test the installed mod’s feature. Keep the previous and new error messages with the package IDs, loaded paths and update time.
If it still fails, give support that record plus the corresponding client and server log excerpts. Remove passwords and other private connection details before sharing logs. An error naming a framework does not establish that the framework itself is defective.
A missing-PBO investigation does not require a world wipe. Restore the previous configuration if a test introduces a startup problem; package rollback also needs compatible client files.
Completion check: both clients make a new join using the intended mod set, content verification passes and the installed feature works.
