Remove contaminated areas from a DayZ server
Trace the source of a gas area before removing it from your DayZ server. Vanilla static areas use the mission’s cfgEffectArea.json, while an economy event creates dynamic gas. Inspect installed mods for other area systems so the change covers every source you intend to disable.
Identify the area before editing
Section titled “Identify the area before editing”Preserve the mission and applicable mod settings with a world backup. Note the selected terrain and location, including whether the gas is persistent or appears during a temporary event.
| Source | Configuration to inspect |
|---|---|
| Static vanilla gas | Review Areas and SafePositions in cfgEffectArea.json. |
| Dynamic vanilla gas | Trace StaticContaminatedArea through db/events.xml and registered overrides. |
| Scripted or mod gas | Inspect the installed author’s settings and spawn implementation. |
Read the child definition even when an event’s name suggests a different behavior. In the reviewed Chernarus StaticContaminatedArea event, the child is ContaminatedArea_Dynamic.
Large footprints span multiple named entries in the pinned Chernarus effect-area file. There is no file at that path in the reviewed Sakhal mission. Start with the installed terrain’s definitions before considering an edit.
Remove selected static areas
Section titled “Remove selected static areas”Keep an untouched copy of the downloaded cfgEffectArea.json. Use Bohemia’s effect-area schema to inspect each object’s AreaName, Type and position in the working copy.
The pinned Chernarus ship footprint uses Ship-Bow, Ship-Center, Ship-Stern and Ship-East. Removing the whole static footprint requires deleting all four objects from the working copy’s Areas array. Preserve the array itself, remaining areas, SafePositions and other existing settings.
To disable all static entries, make Areas an empty array within the complete document. Retain its other structure instead of replacing it with {}. Check all objects covering the selected location; neighboring parts of a multi-part footprint can continue producing gas.
Check the working copy with PowerShell before uploading the JSON:
Get-Content -LiteralPath 'C:\DayZEdits\cfgEffectArea.json' -Raw -ErrorAction Stop | ConvertFrom-Json -ErrorAction Stop | Out-NullUpload while the game process is stopped, then start a private test copy. Check the edited locations, areas retained and session logs. Review loot filters as a separate task if you want ordinary loot in a former contaminated location.
Disable the vanilla dynamic event
Section titled “Disable the vanilla dynamic event”Find the active StaticContaminatedArea definition and inspect registered files for other overrides. For this Chernarus example, save the following document as custom/gas-events.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><events> <event name="StaticContaminatedArea"> <active>0</active> </event></events>Within the current <economycore> in cfgeconomycore.xml, add the file registration:
<ce folder="custom"> <file name="gas-events.xml" type="events" /></ce>Retain all unrelated registrations and resolve conflicting definitions of this event. Since Bohemia supports partial event changes, this override changes activation while leaving the original child list in place.
Validate the complete XML files and transfer them with the process stopped. Start the test instance and observe a recorded event cycle for new dynamic areas. Check existing or saved areas as well; don’t assume disabling the event immediately removes them. Retain persistence during the test.
Diagnose gas that remains and roll back
Section titled “Diagnose gas that remains and roll back”If gas remains, inspect overlapping static objects, the selected mission, event overrides and mod-controlled zones. Collect startup and event logs before another edit. Check a retained area alongside the removal target to catch unintended changes.
Restore the saved JSON, event files and core registrations with the process stopped for rollback. After restarting, revisit the test locations. Keep a record of the build, source names, removed objects, activation flags and observed result beside the backup.
Source and verification scope
Section titled “Source and verification scope”This guide used AI-assisted research and drafting. Checks on 3 October 2026 covered JSON structure, area names and the event example against official mission revision 9a21bb9f5fb9c62a7ce2761402196091588133e6. Verification did not include gas damage, natural events or recovery of saved areas.
