Install SNAFU Weapons on a DayZ PC server

By

Updated

To add SNAFU Weapons to a DayZ Steam PC server, install the Workshop package as client-required content, deploy its signing key and register the supplied economy files in your active mission. Loading the mod makes its classes available; natural loot needs a separate economy configuration.

This procedure covers SNAFU Weapons, Workshop item 2443122116, rather than a retexture or compatibility add-on with a similar name. Xbox, PlayStation and the Microsoft Store PC build cannot use this Workshop procedure.

  • Confirm a vanilla player can join the server before adding the package.
  • Record the game branch, active mission, current mod list and SNAFU package version.
  • Keep a stopped copy of the mission, persistence and mod-owned data using the backup procedure. Rehearse on a separate instance before adding the package to a live community.
  • Read the author’s current Workshop description and Required items before installing. Follow the package’s current requirements; a tutorial’s older mod list is insufficient.

The author permits personal or community server use and separate configuration overrides. Repacking, modifying or redistributing the package needs the author’s permission; monetized servers need prior written approval from the SNAFU Mod Team. Read the current terms on the Workshop page before deployment. Keep your configuration separate from the original PBO files.

  1. Stop the test server.
  2. Open Mods, find the exact Workshop item and choose Install. SNAFU supplies weapons and client assets, so use Client scope.
  3. Wait for the install job to finish. Check Installed mods, its dependencies and load order before starting the server.
  4. Check that the package’s accepted public .bikey is deployed to the server’s central keys/ directory. Keep signature verification enabled.
  5. Start the server and review startup logs for missing packages, script errors or unknown classes.
  6. Join with the matching client package. Confirm that the launcher advertises the requirement and that the join succeeds.

Use File Manager or the service’s supported file transfer for the mission work below. A completed Workshop job does not register every supplied XML or trader configuration.

Follow the manual mod-installation procedure for the download, folder and key steps. Copy the package into the location selected by your startup command.

Append its actual folder to the existing -mod= list. For example, if you installed it as @SNAFU Weapons, the added entry is @SNAFU Weapons; keep the whole argument quoted when paths contain spaces. Preserve existing mods and the dependencies in their required order. Do not put this client-content package into -serverMod=.

Find the XML examples included with the installed release. Check their filenames and contents: a <types> file describes item populations; a <spawnabletypes> file describes attachments or cargo. If the package lacks a needed configuration, use an author-supported source for that release rather than copying an unrelated community pack.

Choose one spawnable-types variant if several are supplied. They can represent different attachment probabilities. Combining all variants can override earlier choices rather than create the distribution you intended.

For the following example, rename copies of the selected files to snafu_types.xml and snafu_spawnabletypes.xml. Retain the original package files.

  1. Stop the server and identify the mission selected by its startup configuration. For vanilla Chernarus this is usually mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/; other terrains use their own mission folder.
  2. Inside that active mission, create a folder named snafu_ce.
  3. Upload the two copied files into it. Validate each as XML before deploying.
  4. Open that mission’s existing cfgeconomycore.xml. Add this block inside its existing <economycore> element, preserving the other contents:
<ce folder="snafu_ce">
<file name="snafu_types.xml" type="types" />
<file name="snafu_spawnabletypes.xml" type="spawnabletypes" />
</ce>
  1. Compare every folder and filename with the uploaded copies, including letter case and extensions. snafu_ce and SNAFU_CE are different paths on a case-sensitive filesystem.
  2. Save, start the server and check new logs for XML, file-registration or unknown-type errors.

The type= values tell DayZ how to interpret each file. Bohemia documents this mechanism in Central Economy mission-file modding. If you register only a types file, omit the spawnabletypes line until you have a valid corresponding file.

Passing an XML syntax check does not establish that the paths exist or the classnames belong to the loaded package. Check the registration, startup logs and in-game results below. A later spawnable-types definition can replace an item’s earlier attachments or cargo, so check for conflicting imports.

Keep these definitions out of the stock db/types.xml so a stock-file update does not remove your additions. Register the SNAFU definitions once; check for earlier imports or another override before adding the block.

Read the supplied entries before raising their nominal or min values. Check the classnames for weapons, magazines, ammunition and compatible attachments, plus the intended usage and tier restrictions.

Confirm that your terrain defines the values used by those entries in its cfglimitsdefinition.xml. A high-tier restriction that works on Chernarus may not match another terrain’s loot areas. Use the loot configuration guide to change the entries you intend to use, preserving the other attributes.

A zero population or restrictive location rule can explain why an installed weapon is absent. Existing economy state and restock timing also affect what you find. Increasing every weapon target at once makes those causes harder to distinguish.

Check What to confirm
Client admission A client with the advertised package joins without signature or missing-PBO errors.
Package loading On the test instance, an authorized admin can spawn a current SNAFU classname from the installed configuration.
Item behavior The weapon accepts its intended magazine, ammunition and attachments, fires and reloads.
Natural loot The registered entry appears in a permitted area after the economy has had time to populate it. Record the classname and location.
Persistence A known saved item remains after a supported restart, with no new missing-class or persistence errors.

Use VPP Admin Tools if you already administer the test instance with VPP. An admin-spawned gun proves the class is available; it does not prove natural spawning works.

If you use Expansion Market, follow the trader configuration procedure. For another trader, use that mod’s instructions. Economy XML does not register trader JSON. Start with a working trader and matching item classnames; verify purchase, sale, pricing and stock as a separate test.

Fix a failed check without wiping the world

Section titled “Fix a failed check without wiping the world”
  • Client cannot join: compare the server and client packages, keys and loading scope. Follow the missing-PBO guide.
  • Admin can spawn the gun but it never appears as loot: check the active mission, the ce block, exact paths, XML validity and that item’s population and location restrictions.
  • Gun appears but magazine or ammunition does not work: compare classnames against the installed release and check conflicting weapon or compatibility mods.
  • Trader does not list it: check trader configuration and category references; increasing nominal does not add a trader entry.

Stop the server on repeated missing-class or persistence errors. Preserve the failed logs, then restore the previous mod list, mission and compatible saved state from your recovery set. Follow the mod-removal guide if removing SNAFU from an existing world; saved SNAFU items need a removal plan.

Deleting storage_1 is not a repair for an incorrect filename. It removes world state and does not establish that your configuration is correct.

Return to the DayZ server guide directory after the player, loot and persistence checks pass.
