Running DayZ at home avoids a hosting-provider invoice, but you still pay for the machine, electricity and connection. If you use free hosting, check what it includes and when it expires. VYKIX’s standard DayZ trial lasts 48 hours. It is available to anyone.

Choose a service that lasts as long as you need it, and check how you’ll back up and export its files. A weekend test and a persistent community world need different plans.

Hosting a DayZ Server on Your Own PC

Before installing mods, check the machine and its connection to the internet:

• Workload. DayZ uses parallel tasks and multithreaded replication. CPU architecture, contention, memory and the mission affect capacity. Use the server requirements guide to test your setup.
• Installation. On Windows, install DayZ Server from the Tools section of your Steam library, or use SteamCMD with stable server app ID 223350. Bohemia’s Linux guide uses a Steam account login. Follow the guide for your OS and enter credentials at the prompt instead of storing them in shared scripts.
• Configuration. Edit the file selected by the -config launch argument, often serverDZ.cfg, to set the name, join password, maxPlayers, mission and time. Preserve the supplied file’s other settings and back up the mission’s persistence storage.
• Inbound access. Match firewall and router rules to your game and query endpoints. Check ISP restrictions and carrier-grade NAT; router forwarding cannot bypass every upstream restriction. Leave RCON closed unless you need restricted remote administration.
• Upload capacity. Test with players connected and normal household traffic running. Measure the workload you expect instead of assigning a player count from an upload-speed figure alone.

Follow the DayZ setup guide for configuration, ports and mod loading. Preserve your complete working config when using its partial example. Ask someone outside the home network to test joining before inviting the group.

You can run the game and server on the same PC. Both processes share its resources, so test with the game running and your intended mods loaded. Check how it plays with people connected; starting the server alone won’t tell you whether it can handle them.

What “Free” Costs When the Server Goes Public

At home, you pay for power and connectivity and maintain the service yourself. You also need a way to restore the world if something fails.

Availability and recovery. Keep the machine, game process and connection running while players use the server. Plan update windows and downtime. Store verified persistence backups outside the machine so a disk failure cannot remove every copy.

Bandwidth. Players share the household’s upload connection. If play deteriorates, compare network readings with logs and resource use to check whether the connection or another part of the setup is struggling.

Public endpoint. Players and listing services need a reachable address. Direct home hosting can expose the connection’s public IP. That isn’t your street address, but consider whether you want to use your household connection for a public community.

Upstream protection. Ask your ISP how it handles attacks and what mitigation it provides. Once traffic saturates an upstream link, a firewall at home cannot restore that link’s capacity. The DayZ DDoS protection guide explains game and query controls to ask about.

A home server can suit your group if you can maintain it, recover the files and work within the connection’s limits.

Check the Conditions of a Free Hosting Tier

Read the resource allowance, expiry and retention policy before deciding where to keep a persistent world.

Check these points before uploading it:

1. Does the offer have slot caps, queues, sleep timers, paid upgrades or other conditions?
2. What happens to persistence while the server is idle or you stop logging in?
3. Which DDoS controls handle DayZ game and query traffic?
4. Can you export the mission and player profiles before access ends?

Keep your world elsewhere until you know how long you can access it and when the provider deletes its files.

You can test the DayZ service under Terms §3.12:

• 48 hours free, PC-only. We do not host console DayZ.
• Card verification, no trial charge. A valid card is required for fraud prevention. We take no payment during the trial or when it ends.
• A separate paid order to continue. The trial cannot turn into a paid subscription.
• Suspension at expiry. We delete active data seven calendar days after suspension. Export the files you need before the trial expires.
• Possible hardware differences. Check the configuration named in the paid order; it may differ from the trial.

Use the trial to test mod compatibility, player joins and the panel. Record the hardware and tested population with your results. Export a copy before expiry while you have access to the service.

Paid managed DayZ runs in Chicago or Amsterdam, with monthly, quarterly or semi-annual billing.
