How Escape From DayZ Survived a 980 Gbps Pulse Wave DDoS

Original captures from Escape From DayZ's wipe-day DDoS attack show repeated bursts and a reported peak near 980 Gbps. Our account explains the response and evidence.

A wipe gives a DayZ community a shared starting point. If players cannot connect when it opens, the owner has to work out whether the problem is game load, the server listing or the network.

Our Escape From DayZ account describes a DDoS attack during a wipe, with a reported peak near 980 Gbps. The traffic did not arrive as one steady flood. The original captures show groups of narrow bursts, rising and falling through the recorded window.

We reported that the server stayed online. The charts support the traffic pattern and approximate scale; they contain no player-session, downtime or packet-loss measurements.

Escape From DayZ also appears in our historical server-ranking capture. That separate snapshot cannot tell us how many players were connected during this incident.

What a Pulse Wave DDoS Attack Is

A pulse wave delivers repeated short bursts of traffic. In the close-up, the network load rises and falls several times. The image preserves that shape, but it does not provide raw samples for calculating an exact period.

A protection system’s response depends on its active controls, the time it takes to detect changes and its available resources. An owner needs to know what happens during the burst itself, including whether valid queries and game traffic remain usable.

The Apparent Source Networks

The next capture groups traffic by apparent source network. It gives another view of how the flood was distributed, though some names are truncated.

These are address-based network labels, not an identification of who controlled the traffic.

Why Wipe Day Is the Worst Time to Be Unprotected

A wipe can concentrate returning players and join requests into the same period. That makes it a useful part of your test plan: check the game process, listing queries and connection handling under the activity you expect.

When a launch fails, keep those paths separate in the investigation. High server load, an unavailable listing and an upstream flood can all produce a failed join, but they call for different evidence and changes.

How VxShield Held the Line

VxShield runs as our in-house game-traffic protection at the network edge. For burst traffic, the useful questions concern the controls already in place and the resources available while the burst arrives.

  • Active edge controls. Our Anycast edge provides the filtering path; the response depends on the traffic and configured rules.
  • Capacity. The published 17 Tbps figure describes protection-network filtering capacity, not a per-server promise or proof of this result.
  • Application checks. Game and session records are needed to establish what players experienced alongside the network graph.

Our Rearmed 5.9 GHz build account is a separate hardware example. It does not identify the machine used for this incident.

The Reported Outcome

Our incident account says Escape From DayZ remained online through the wipe-day attack. Application and packet-loss records are not retained alongside the traffic charts, so the availability result remains attributed to our account.

The 2.56 Tbps Ground Zero case study has a detailed mitigation report for a different incident. For traffic classification, read the Echoes of Chernobyl packet-spoofing account and the KarmaKrew A2S account. Our DayZ DDoS protection docs cover the configuration.

Common Questions

What is a pulse wave DDoS attack?

A pulse wave uses short, repeated bursts rather than a steady flood. Escape From DayZ’s original captures show that pattern, with a reported peak near 980 Gbps. They do not establish the same interval between every burst.

How big was the DDoS attack on Escape From DayZ?

Our account reports a peak near 980 Gbps during a wipe. The original charts show repeated bursts and multiple apparent source networks; they do not provide a full raw traffic series.

Why do DDoS attacks happen on wipe day?

A wipe can bring players back together and make a failed connection especially disruptive. Our account places this incident during a wipe; the charts cannot tell us the attacker’s motive or the connected population.

Can VxShield stop a pulse wave DDoS attack?

Active filtering, detection timing and network and packet-processing capacity all affect the response to bursts. We reported that Escape From DayZ stayed online, but the traffic charts do not verify exact downtime or packet loss.

How do I protect my DayZ server from DDoS on wipe day?

Ask how the provider handles short bursts, where filtering runs and which game and query paths it checks. Prepare separate records for traffic, browser replies and player sessions. VxShield is included with VYKIX DayZ hosting, but no filtering setup guarantees every outcome.

Before a wipe, confirm the protection profile and the records you can collect if players struggle to connect. VxShield is included with VYKIX plans. Our switcher offer includes best-effort migration and seven days added to the paid plan after eligibility and scope are confirmed; terms apply.
