Free Rust Server Hosting: What to Check Across a Wipe Cycle

Before choosing free Rust server hosting, check whether you can get your world back. Then check who updates it on wipe day and what happens when the group logs off.
Self-hosting, a provider’s free tier and a short trial leave you with different costs and responsibilities. For Rust PC, compare them at four moments: an update, a busy session, an empty server and file export.

Choose a test session that resembles how your group plays, whether that is wipe night, a busy weekend or an arranged private game.
Self-hosting: a free download with operating costs
Facepunch provides the dedicated server through SteamCMD with anonymous login. You do not buy another Rust licence for the server download; players need the game to play. The publisher lists 12 GB free RAM and 15 GB free disk space as a baseline, with larger maps needing more resources. That does not establish capacity for a modded community. Official server setup
You supply the machine, electricity, connection and admin time. Work through these parts before exposing it:
- Capacity: measure your map, plugins and player activity using the Rust requirements guide.
- Availability: decide when the machine must run and who will recover it after a failed update or power interruption.
- Connectivity: confirm that your ISP supports public reachability and hosting. Expose the required services without opening every port for RCON or Rust+.
- Recovery: back up the save, configuration and plugin data, then test a restore outside the live instance.
Ask the ISP about upstream DDoS protection. A local firewall cannot establish how much attack traffic the connection can handle. Use the Rust protection guide to check coverage and responsibility.

Free tiers: ask about the actual offer
Compare the provider’s written terms, without assuming all free tiers have the same limits:
- How long does the offer last, and can the provider withdraw or change it?
- What are the CPU, memory, storage and player limits? What happens at a limit?
- Does an empty server sleep, enter a startup queue or need manual renewal?
- Who applies Rust updates, and can you run a compatible framework version?
- Can you export world, configuration, permissions and plugin data without paying to unlock them?
- Which protection and support are included, with what limits?
Save the terms before moving your community. Keep short-session results separate from any untested month-long availability requirement.

If you continue with paid hosting
The listed managed Rust plan is priced per server, with player slots subject to fair use. It names the VX-BM-I9-14900K-OC build, DDR5 memory and NVMe storage under fair-use terms, file access, Oxide/Carbon support, three same-server backup slots and VxShield protection.
Those backup slots share the host with your active files. Keep an independent copy for loss of the host itself.
